When you hear the number 164.4 MPH you’re probably thinking of a car going super fast! Well you're wrong that is the fastest serve in tennis in the whole world! (male) Yes, you heard me! The incredible person that hit that was Sam Groth. Well tennis was not always just a ball and a racket that you try to swing and hit. Back in the day tennis was played with the palm of your hand! I know that sounds painful! Tennis first started way back in the 1870s. It was invented in France in the 11th century. Major Walter Clopton Wingfield was the creator of the game tennis! Something that is very interesting is that yellow tennis balls were used at Wimbledon for the first time in 1986! Something very astonishing is that Henry "Bunny" Austin was the first player to wear shorts at Wimbledon in 1932. Margaret Smith Court holds the record with 24 Grand Slam singles titles! Venus and Serena Williams became the first set of sisters to ever win Olympic gold medals in tennis. The first African American to win the US open was Arthur Ashe. The first women to play in the Wimbledon tournament wore full length dresses. Every year, 24 tons of Kent strawberries are ordered for the Championships at Wimbledon. A Grand Slam final once finished in 34 minutes! Tennis originated in France and is based on a game called 'Jeu de paume'. Tennis Court located at Hampton Court Palace, London is the world's oldest tennis court and it is still in use. Legendary tennis player Jimmy Connors holds the honour of being the only tennis player to have won the prestigious US Open on three different surfaces -grass at Forest Hills in 1974, clay at Forest Hills in 1976, and hard court in 1978 at Flushing Meadows. In 1907, Austrian tennis player Mita Klima became the youngest player to have ever played at Wimbledon. Before yellow tennis balls were used in tennis there were white. It wasn’t until Wimbledon in 1986 when yellow tennis balls were used. People believed that a yellow ball would be easier for spectators to follow on TV. A player once ran 3 miles on the tennis court in one game! Due to the restricted length of a tennis court, that is a hard 3 miles of continuous back and forth moving! The fastest server in the women's tennis was done by Venus Williams (female) who recorded a serve of 205 km/h. The word “Tennis” comes from the Anglo-Norman term “Tenez.” The first Wimbledon Match was played in 1877. The longest tennis match ever played took 11 hours and 5 minutes to finish. It was played between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut. At the end, John Isner won with a score line of 6–4, 3–6, 6–7, (7–9), 7–6(7–3), 70–68 (final set). One of the best experiences for me playing tennis was hitting my first serve! It was such an incredible moment and I wish you the best and if you want to start tennis go for it! I hope all of you have a nice day and I hope you learned some fun facts about tennis!
